A woman can't have just one phone cozy, right?

I made my sister another phone cozy, this time in red. Like what I did for her husband's cozy (Donna's Phone Cozy #2), I played with bullion stitches and sc's with this one too. (I made a very good video hub on how to crochet bullion stitches, so this should not be a problem.)

However, instead of working it in rounds back and forth, I worked it spirally in rounds. I love working in a spiral because I hate those slip stitches needed to close each round.

Working it in a spiral produces a crochet fabric that looks slightly different from each other. On the right side, the bullion stitches swells more making this side humpier (see first photo below). On the wrong side, the bullion stitches are flat and the sc's make V's in between (see second photo below).

This worked perfectly fine because the lumpier right side serves as a cushion for the phone. The smoother wrong side allows the phone to slide in easily.

Required Skill:

  • Working on both sides of the chain
  • Working in rounds
  • Crocheting sc's
  • 3-wrap bullion stitch
  • Blocking (video below)

Measurements:

Length: 5.5 in

Width: 3 in

I still forgot to measure the gauge for this one. (Sigh.)

Materials and Tools:

  • Mercerized crochet cotton
  • #7 (1.65mm) steel hook
  • Stitch marker

The phone cozy fits just right and its texture helps it cling to the phone. It does need a closure.

Special Stitch: 3-Wrap Bullion Stitches

To crochet a 3-wrap bullion stitch (abbreviated as 3bs):

Y o 3x, insert hook, y o, draw through 5 loops on hook.

Just like in Donna's Phone Cozy #2, the bullion stitches I used here are incomplete bullion stitches because their height is not secured with an elongated chain.

But that's okay because the sc's next to the bullion stitches secures the them.

Abbreviations:

Ch - chain

Sc - single crochet

3bs - 3-wrap bullion stitch

Sl st - slip stitch

Written Pattern:

Foundation Chain: Ch 27 (or any odd number of chains).

Note: Round 1 has an ODD number of sc's so a staggered arrangement of sc and 3bs could be achieved in the succeeding rounds.

Round 1: Sc on the second ch from hook, 24 sc, 3 sc on the remaining ch, (begin work on the other side of the chain) 25 sc, sl st to 1st sc of round, DO NOT TURN. Stitch count: 53 sc

Reminder: Crochet the sc's in Rounds 2-3 tight.

Round 2: 3bs (attach stitch marker on this stitch), (sc, 3bs) 26x, DO NOT TURN. (Remove the stitch marker.)

Stitch count: 27 3bs + 26 sc = 53 sts

Round 3: Sc (attach stitch marker on this stitch), (3bs, sc) 26x, DO NOT TURN. (Remove the stitch marker.)

Stitch count: 27 sc + 26 3bs = 53 sts

Repeat Round 2-3 X times.

Sl st the last round to achieve a finished look for the phone cozy. Break off and weave in ends.

The following chart pattern is NOT an actual representation of the written pattern.

It only serves as an illustration of the written pattern. However, it can also serve as a formula/recipe should you want to modify this pattern into something else.

Blocking:

To add a professional finish to this phone cozy, blocking is required. If this phone cozy is to be a surprise, it would look really nice if it does not curl at the corners, which is what happens when crochet is fresh off the hook.

This video tutorial is very amateur. But all the essentials in blocking a crocheted item is well covered.

Here it is just beside the phone its meant to protect. Red... I love red.
