Diamond Mesh Crochet Scrunchies

I always use scrunchies to tie my hair. But when I looked up free crochet scrunchies patterns, most of them are done by anchoring the stitches on the hair elastic. Since I crochet plarn exclusively, working stitches this way means breaking of stitches before I get bored with my scrunchies!

Finally, I realized that if I enclose the hair elastic in a round diamond mesh, that should do the trick for me. The diamond mesh will stretch together with the hair elastic - PERFECT! All my sisters and friends are getting one diamond mesh scrunchies this Christmas. I'm sure they'd be able to use it.

Why don't you make one for yourself and/or your loved ones?

The difficult parts of this pattern are the dtr stitches and getting lost in the rounds.

Materials and Tools

Materials:

  • yarn (I used 1-cm single-strand softened plarn from a large plastic bag)
  • garter (I used 3/4-in black garter because we Asians have black hair, it won't be noticeable once worn)
  • sewing thread same color as yarn.

Click here to learn the methods of making plarn and how to condition (spin or soften) it for crochet.

Tools

  • crochet hook 2 sizes down from the suggested size for your yarn (I used #7 steel hook)
  • tapestry needle
  • sewing needle

Design Notes

Keep the tension tight/compact because the mesh will be under a lot of stress and stretch. You don't want it to break on you.

Abbreviations

  • ch - chain
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • sk - skip
  • sp - space
  • dtr - double treble crochet

Project Instructions

This will be a combination of crochet and sewing instructions and will be divided into three major parts.

STEP 1: Crocheting the Round Diamond Mesh

Foundation Ring: Ch 24, sl st to form ring. Turn.

R1: [Ch 8, sk 8 ch, sl st] 2x, ch 3, sk 8 ch, dtr. Turn.

R2: [Ch 8, sl st in ch-8 sp] 2x, ch 3, dtr in dtr-ch-3 sp. Turn.

Repeat R2 40x or until you have a stretched length of 16 in.

STEP 2: Inserting the Garter Inside the Mesh

Cut a 6-in length of garter.

Stitch the edges of the garter to keep them from raveling.

Pass the garter inside the diamond mesh.

Overlap 1/2 in to have a circle with 5-in circumference

Stitch the sides and the center too.

STEP 3: Closing the Diamond Mesh

To join the the diamond mesh [ch 4, sl st in adjacent 8-ch sp on the foundation ring, ch 4, sl st in 8-ch sp of previous round] 3x.

Weave in ends along the dtr's. Sew the end in place.

What a great idea....I use to crochet years ago, just the simple stitch, but it worked for what I wanted to do.

Maybe I'll get back into it this fall!!

Really? You haven't seen garters in ages? They're so common here. I hope your friends will love the scrunchies.

My hair isn't long enough to wear one, but I have many friends who would love receiving something like this for Christmas. Thanks for posting the pattern! Don't know where I would find garters though. Haven't seen those in ages! Rated up and useful.
