Crochet 3D Pointed-Center Flower Free Pattern

An old friend ordered a set of Sweet Innocence Necklace for herself and her eldest daughter after she saw my niece Bella wearing one. (The Sweet Innocence Necklace is crocheted with plarn from black garbage bag and pink plastic bag. It's so cute - see the picture of my sister modeling it floating right.)

However, I didn't want to use the Hofri Flower as their pendant because I don't want it to be an exact copy of the necklace I designed for my niece Bella.

What served as an inspiration for me were the crochet flowers with puff or cluster petals. However, I didn't just want to copy someone else's design, so I made my own. I experimented with a lot designs before deciding on the best pendant for Rowena's necklaces.

My crochet flowers must have something special about it. I don't want it to pale in comparison to similar crochet flowers that came before it.

My first try was a crochet ring with crochet puffs as petals - too small. In my second try I placed picots in the ring where I can work the puffs - too open and big. For my third try, I used crochet clusters for its petals to have a flower bigger than the first and more solid than the second. I thought it was great except for that big hole in the center.

To remedy that, I used the technique I utilized for the original pattern of my 3D Scalloped Flower. I slip stitched in between the petals pinching each petal towards the center, at the same time filling in the hole. I topped it with an sc-tog to close the hole.

Pleased with my third try, I proceeded with its pair. Yet this time around, I used sc's in between the petals instead of sl st's. Moreover, I added two layers of sl st's and finished it still with an sc-tog. This change gave it a pointed-center. Wow! I super love it!

I used red and pink 1/4-in plarn cut from a small- and medium-sized plastic bags for those are the colors that Rowena requested. To crochet it with I used #7 steel hook which is commonly used for mercerized cotton.

The crochet instructions in this pattern uses American notation.

• ch - chain
• sl st - slip stitch
• sp - space
• sc - single crochet
• y o - yarn over

First Try: PUNY PUFF FLOWER

Foundation Ring: Ch 5, sl st into ring.

Round 1: [Ch 2, I puff in ring, ch 3, sl st in ring] 5x. Fasten off.

Second Try: OPEN PUFF FLOWER

Foundation Ring: Ch 5, sl st into ring.

Round 1: [Ch 3, sl st in ring] 7x.

Round 2: [ch 2, puff in ch-3 sp, ch 3, sl st in ch-3 sp, sl st in next ch-3 sp] 7x. Fasten off.

Third Try: 2D CLUSTER FLOWER

Foundation Ring: Ch 5, sl st into ring.

Round 1: [Ch 2, cluster in ring, ch 3, sl st in ring] 5x.

Round 2: [Sl st in between the petals] 5x, [insert hook in sl st, draw a loop through] 4x, y o, draw through all 5 loops on hook.

Break off. Bring yarn end to the back of the flower. Fasten off.

Fourth Try: 3D POINTED-CENTER CLUSTER FLOWER

Foundation Ring and Round 1 same as 2D Cluster Flower.

Round 2: [sc in between the petals] 5x, [sl st the next sc] 5x, [sl st the next sl st] 5x, insert hook in next stitch, draw a loop through, sk 2 sts, yo, draw through 3 loops on hook.

Break off. Bring yarn end to the back of the flower. Fasten off.
